What information in this video do you find most intriguing? Most surprising?

Many thanks to Patrick Harrington for sharing this.

  1. There are a lot of statistics thrown at the viewer very quickly, but I'll post some of my initial thoughts. Social media is obviously a genius idea, otherwise it wouldn't have spread so incredibly fast. However, I find it frightening to think how much pressure this puts on the individual; if everybody (friends, family, EMPLOYERS, etc.) is looking at your Facebook instead of at you, real problems can occur. Only getting "one first impression" is cliche, I know, but it would appear that our first impression has become what is on our Facebook rather than what is on our face. I think Facebook is fun, ingenious, and a great way to stay in touch, but knowing "80% of companies use social media for recruitment" seems wrong. Is it the first impression? I don't know. I guess my point is where is the line drawn? To me Facebook sells because it is comfortable: I don't have to have an actual conversation with you, I don't need to worry about offending you or embarrassing myself. I don't know about you, but in my short experience on this Earth I have observed that not much gets done when people are comfortable. A movie quote from "The Third Man" illustrates this well: "Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.". [Sorry for the length.]

  2. I was shocked when I read that Ashton Kutcher and Britney Spears had more followers on Twitter than Switzerland and other countries.

  3. This is absolutely insane to think about. I think the idea of social media is a great idea because there are a lot of ways people can get access to internet so that we can communicate with people all around the world. It is a great way to meet new friends and who knows you might be one of the success stories on T.V for finding your "soulmate" on eharmony.com! I am a huge supporter of social media and can't wait to see what it has in store for us in the future.

  4. I'm not quite sure how I feel about social media, on one hand i think that yea it is good and yea it is a giant shift in the way we as people do things. but at what point does it become too much? for me when people start using it as a sole source of news without going out and finding the facts out for one's self then it becomes a problem. i just hope that people aren't substituting experiences on facebook with real life experiences. One thing that i found surprising was the stat about people using the internet as a source for pornography, I didn't know that it was something that was that high, i think it is good that people are now using the internet as a source of info rather than as a source of porn.
